Accra, June 6, GNA – The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on Thursday donated a cheque for GH¢100, 000 to Sweden-Ghana Cancer Foundation (SGCF) in Accra.

The donation which would continue on a monthly basis is to support the foundation initiatives to provide financial support for early treatment of cancer patients, who would not be able to afford the cost of treatment, and to educate the public on the disease prevention.
Mrs Irene Duncan-Adanusa, General Secretary of GNAT said the association recognises that the initial contribution may appear inadequate, but the agreement makes provision for review of the rate of the contribution upwards annually.
She noted that although cancer remains a mystery and the treatment is very expensive, the National Health Insurance Scheme is not covering the process.

“Apart from the physical pain, the patient also undergoes bouts of mental depression,” she said.
Mrs Duncan-Adanusa said education and screening for early detection of the disease is very important which could also facilitate treatment.
She said the diseases have serious effects on dependents, family and care givers who go through a lot of fiscal and emotions stress.
Mrs Duncan-Adanusa said GNAT is interested in reinforcing education on cancer at all Regional and District centres.
She said a formal agreement has been contracted between the Association and the SGCF in regards to the identification and processing of cost service and possible discounts for GNAT members who use the services.

She said the collaboration would enable GNAT members to have access to all the services rendered at the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, which includes screening, computer tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging, consultation and advise radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment at no cost.
“No member of GNAT or relative of the Association should remain vulnerable to cancer,” she said.
Dr Henry Broni-Amponsah, a member of the Board of Trustees who received the donation on behalf of the foundation thanked GNAT for the gesture.
